RIP VAN WINKLE COUNCIL   |   BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

ABOUT

Troop 70 is chartered by the Boy Scouts of America, which is headquartered in Irving, Texas. We are part of the Rip Van Winkle Council and we are in the Algonquin District. Our sponsor is the Highland Presbyterian Church, which provides us with a meeting place and offers other support to the unit. The Boy Scouts of America was founded in 1910 and is part of the worldwide Scouting movement started by Lord Baden Powell. Scouting emphasizes as its goals character, citizenship and fitness. For older and more experienced scouts, leadership positions provide important growth opportunities.

Troop 70 started in 1922 and has continuously been operating since 1961 and has enrollment levels of 20 to 30 scouts annually. It has supported the development of many youth over the years including more than 50 Eagle Scouts.

In 2019, the Troop became a linked troop welcoming both boys and girls into the program. Troop 70 B and Troop 70 G, sharing the same committee.

Troop 70 follows all guidelines issued by the National Scouting organization as well as the local Rip Van Winkle Council. These guidelines include the topic of Youth Protection.  Troop 70 is a “Scout Led” program. Scouts elect their leadership and some scout leadership positions are appointed post election. The scout leaders help facilitate this program.
